Studio lighting practice 3 (LO2, LO3)
In this studio practise session I tried to recreate the image I found on internet. I was looking for an interesting studio lighting set up. I find black and white photography very interesting and “honest” so I chose a picture where black and white finish stands out.
Inspirational image
I like how the light is defining the subject. It is basically a rim light but not on all subject’s parts.

How did I recreate the image?
I prepared a black backdrop and asked the model to sit around 2 metres in front of it. I decided to use lights with barndoors because they can help me to manage the amount of light and direction of light on the subject. The lights were placed on both sides of the subject and a slightly behind shoulders. It was really about playing with opening/closing the barndoors to catch only a tiny streak of light on subject. I set up my camera 1/100s, f/16, ISO 100. I used zoom lens 24-70mm f/2.8S and edited the final image in Lightroom.
This is my final image. I tried to use a reflector to add more light to the face and upper body but it didn’t make any change. I am quite happy with my result and think it is quite close to the inspirational image I found on internet.
These are other images taken during the practise. The last one is an example of a split lighting.
